Rough Start for Greenfield

A rough start to the 2006 season for Greenfield, losing the first game to Victoria Park on Sunday. After being sent in to bat by Victoria Park on a brilliant May morning, our batting stuttered early on and never recovered. It was an innings where the extras top scored, the top four batsmen ended up back in the pavilion for a combined score of 2, and three batsmen could argue they were hard done, being given out to what seemed to be no balls. The anxiety we felt watching wicket after wicket fall was not abated even after watching Arees score a quick fire 26, and the slight lower order resistance was quickly done away with as Victoria Park bowled us out for 79.

Victoria Park came out to bat and immediately set about their work, but soon found themselves in a bit of trouble as Karl dismissed the openers early with both being caught behind the wicket. However, a solid 57-run partnership between Zain and Ron pretty much sealed the deal for VP, and even though Zain eventually was caught at point by Rahul, the damage was already done and it wasn’t long before VP captain Steve hit the winning runs.

It’s pretty obvious to all the batting was a bit rusty and needs to be worked on before the next game. Given the small total, the bowling and fielding was admirable and the true Greenfield spirit shone through with everyone giving 100% up until the winning runs were hit. This was only our first game of the season and I am sure everyone already knows that the only place we can go from here is up.
