Match
Report by Rajeev Nair:
Greenfield pulled of a very
important victory against Gujarat on Sunday, June 29th. The
match played on a hot sunny day at the Millwoods ground saw the
momentum swing both ways before the cool heads of the Greenfield
players prevailed. If anyone has to take any lesson from this
game, that is the age old saying in cricket that a game is not done
until the last ball it bowled or the last run is scored.
Greenfield was staring at defeat when the Gujarat batsmen, chasing a
total of 224 in 45 overs, aided by immense luck and some
questionable umpiring threw their bats at everything the bowlers
had to offer. It was a great team effort that helped Greenfield
get through that difficult phase.
We fielded like there were 18 fielders on the ground. It was
quite impressive to see the fielders hurling their bodies against the
ball. The human wall that we built around the Gujarat batsmen
forced them to take a lot of risks. True, they were lucky and
got away with some of them but in the end we made them pay for
it. I would like to take this opportunity to commend on
the excellent bowling performances by Arees, Rahul and Sabu. It was
also an impressive batting performance once again by the middle order.
Sunil, Arees and Jeff laid the foundation for a big total in a truly
impressive display of stroke making. I would also like to thank
all the people who cheered for us from the sidelines especially, Imran
who made sure we did not get dehydrated in that hot weather.
We have to keep this momentum going. This win is an important
one but none as important as the upcoming matches. We have been
giving a lot of extra runs for the opposition (49 in this
game!). That is simply inexcusable. We are going to get in
serious difficulty if we don't make an effort to cut these down at
least by 75%. We were lucky in the last two games that we had
quite a few runs on the board. Such luxury may not be there all
the time. So we need to tighten things up on that end. Well,
keep practicing hard and have faith and the results will follow. |
