Match
Report by Jonathan Rae:
Greenfield started the day with a minute of silence and prayers,
acknowledging the recent tragedy in USA. Our deepest condolences to the
family members of innocent lives. Having this in mind, Greenfield were
trying to be in good spirits for the start of the Howe Cup, but wary of
the threat posed by the dangerous, but unpredictable Junior team. Wary of
overconfidence, and warned of the fact that the Juniors had beaten
Greenfield many times, the air in the GCC camp was one of business.
The toss was, unfortunately lost by GCC, and, bearing in mind the juniors
only had 7 players at that time, it was not a hard decision for Juniors
Skipper Salman to ask Greenfield to field. It was a sunny, but breezy day,
and the wind was blowing down the hill of the Millwoods pitch to aid the
pace of Ram. Sunil was asked to open at the other end, and it was hoped
that both would exploit the weaknesses of the Junior team to sheer pace. A
field with two slips in place greeted the opening batsman, and the
Greenfield players were not to be disappointed by the start their opening
bowlers. Coming down the church end, with the wind behind him, Ram put his
all into his bowling and, after missing the outside edge, then got his
reward, shattering Zulfigar's defenses and wicket for a single, and
Greenfield were off to a good start. The very next over, Sunil, bowling
equally as well bowling into the wind, got his reward, when an ordinary
long hop was slashed to gully by Feroz, whereupon Ram, rivaling himself
for catch of the season, jumped up, knocked the ball vertically, fell
down, and caught the ball whilst still scrambling on the ground. The
Juniors were 7 for 2 wickets. However, for the next 20 overs the Juniors
fight back continued. Despite repeatedly playing and missing, especially
from Harish, but he accumulated enough runs to frustrate the bowlers. On
the other end, Ahzum played three identical shots over the top of Arvind's
bowling towards the mid off. With the frustration of the swing bowlers,
the time for spin had arrived, and the medium pace spinning of Arees first
undid Ahzum and then the dangerous Salman, who came out just to hit. Faraz
soon followed, Arees having to trap him lbw twice to dismiss him. When
Harish was run out soon after, the Junior's innings drew to a close, at
144-7. Our keeper Rajeev was made to work by almost all of the bowlers and
was excellent behind the stumps.
After wrapping up the innings early, and after tea, the Greenfield openers
Venkat and Arvind set about getting the score. At some points during the
innings they looked as if they were trying to finish it inside 20 overs!
Despite repeated discussions on the sidelines, Venkat and Arvind did their
best to get each other run out, but, for the moment, were unsuccessful.
The decision from Salman to bowl into the wind, certainly helped the
Greenfield's cause, and Venkat in particular looked calm and collected
dispatching the opening bowlers to the boundary. Arvind also looked solid
and stylish opening the face on numerous occasions to nudge the ball wide
of the despairing fielders. At 43-1 Greenfield looked comfortable. Even
when Venkat gave his wicket away with a skied catch for his average-saving
score of 30, GCC were looking good. The run out that was threatening to
happen involved both Rajeev and Arvind running for two after a miss-field.
The cardinal rule of Cricket "never run on a miss-field" proving right
again, as Arvind was well short of his ground when the stumps were broken.
This brought Arees to the crease, with a flourish of attacking shots off
the bowling that was becoming more and more demoralized as time wore on.
Rajeev played the supporting role well, rotating the strike and
frustrating the bowlers more. The game was won, as Greenfield cantered to
the total off 27 overs, with Arees top scoring with an impressive 65 not
out. Yet again Steve "pad up" Turner being the good luck charm, spent most
of the innings with his pads on.
Man of the Match : Arees Rauf, The Howe Cup comes and Arees cashes in. |
