Match
Report by Arvind Prasad:
A hot summer day for the Edmonton vs. Greenfield match. The second match between
the two teams played in contrasting weather conditions relative to the first
match, in which Edmonton trounced Greenfield. Greenfield was going into the
match with two straight losses and a major change in in-form fast bowler
Jonathan’s unavailability, filled in by Hemant. ECC too had a major reshuffle in
the team, again due to player’s unavailability. They went in, less three star
batsmen, but got Adeel, Salman, Fahad, Faraz and Ahzum from junior colts team.
Their bowling attack was much the same as the previous game with the exception
of Shahid Bashir and Rohit Patwardhan. However, they still had the
wrecker-in-chief of the previous match, Assad Jamil and Adnan.
Greenfield lost the toss again and ECC decided to send GCC in to bat first. A
good and obvious strategy considering GCC’s dismal batting performance in the
prior two games. A lot of thought went into GCC’s batting line-up and captain
Arees and Venkat opened this time. GCC were exposing their two best batsmen to
the new ball attack of Assad and Salman and things went relatively well. 9 overs
and 31 for the loss of Arees, who was yorked by Salman. Venkat and Rajeev played
steadily for a magnificent half-century second wicket stand before Rajeev (32)
was unfortunately run out in a mix-up just before the drinks break. After 25
overs the score read 85 for 2. A bit low on the run rate, but for a change,
plenty of wickets in hand. Arvind had joined Venkat after the fall of Rajeev’s
wicket and after the drinks break there was a sudden burst of runs from both
batsmen and after 30 overs the run rate hit 4 per over for the first time in the
innings. In the process Venkat notched a brilliant half-century, his first in
this league and another half-century stand for the third wicket ended with
Venkat getting out to a tired looking shot. Steve was out next after playing
some nice shots and Sunil followed next with a short stay at the wicket. Three
relatively quick wickets and chances of a collapse were on the cards. A respite
for ECC bowlers who had bowled 35 overs for three wickets! On the other hand GCC
had fair chances of making it to 200+, first time in this season, if the
collapse could be prevented. Ram, promoted up the batting order, not only
prevented a collapse, but also pushed the run rate well beyond four. He hit 2
massive sixes and two sweetly timed boundaries for his quickfire 30 odd runs.
Meanwhile, Arvind was out in the penultimate over after scoring his highest
league score of 39. Zaufer, Prashan and Sohail got only few deliveries to play
and GCC ended with 207 for 8 in their allotted 45 overs. A great performance by
GCC batsmen, who were fast becoming the potential laughing stock of the A
division for the lack of their batting success. Definitely a brilliant turn
around since it came against the same side, which had ran through the GCC
batting in the previous outing.
ECC batsmen’s’ role was cut out with a 4.6 run per over rate, a kind of score
that gives even chances to both the batting and the bowling side. With their
usual batting stars not around, they sent in one of their hard hitters Assad as
opener. A good move, since a quick few runs in the very beginning can put
pressure on the bowling side. However, a first ball rash shot by Assad gave
Sunil a nice birthday present in a first ball wicket! In following eventful
overs, where a simple chance was put down by Arvind, a myriad of line and length
bowling by Prashan and couple of good strokes by the batsmen, GCC came out on
the top with ECC 31 for 3 in 8 overs. Both the wickets going to Prashan,
including the wicket of Adeel. But Fahad and Amir steadied the innings with an
authoritative 50+ run stand for the fourth wicket. A wicket was badly required
for GCC and off-spinner Arvind got the breakthrough when he clean bowled Fahad.
Arvind initiated a mini collapse, when he got 2 wickets in his second over and
suddenly ECC were in trouble at 92 for 6 off 20 overs. ECC was doing well with
the run rate, but wickets were a concern. A brilliant batting display at this
point by Amir swung the scale in favor of ECC again, including a huge six off
Arvind and some majestic shots. At the break after 25 overs they were 116 for 6,
well within reach of a victory. GCC needed to break this partnership, which was
threatening to take the game away from them. In the first over after the break,
Arvind got his revenge when he foxed Amir with a quicker one, which brought in
their captain. Meanwhile, Adnan was beautifully set and now it was him who had
started to look dangerous. Arees got rid of Javad, 140 for 8, still achievable
with the way Adnan was batting, helped by some erratic GCC bowling. Arees
persisted with Arvind, who did not disappoint his captain when he had Adnan
caught by Ram (his second catch of the day) at long-on giving Arvind a match
haul of 5 wickets. It was all over now and the final wicket also went to Arvind,
a serendipitous LBW decision going in his favor (not that it would have affected
the final result in any way). GCC won by 53 runs. Wonderful wicket keeping by
Rajeev who took two good catches and some good fielding by GCC yet again.
Man of the Match, Arvind’s brilliant all-around performance (39 runs and 6-37)
earned him the man of the match award. His exceptional spin bowling and timely
batting set an example to other members of his team. He took his time to choose
his strokes and faced the opponents with confidence. His long stay at the crease
made a huge impact on the GCC score as he put on a valuable partnership with
Vekant. His accurate bowling made the difference for Greenfield victory, a
victory that we all waited for. Calm and cool Arvind was our match winner.
Venkat came close with his sheet anchor half century, which laid the foundation
for a good score.
Thoughts and comments: A good, hard earned win and sweet revenge for GCC, helped
by some careless batting by ECC. They went for huge shots when all they had to
do was play for singles, the required run-rate being well under control. Lessons
for GCC too. Too many sundries (close to 30 in as many overs) could have proved
fatal. GCC looks prone to lose grip of the situation very easily by poor
bowling. This was evident in the first match against Millwoods too, when they
allowed Millwoods to score 180 odd runs after pegging them at 100 for seven. The
bowlers should learn to bowl tight and not give away easy runs to the
opposition, thereby relieving the pressure. With the batting getting some
confidence back, hopefully GCC will bat well from now onwards. The season looks
wide open for all the teams. |
