Match
Report by Jonathan Rae:
For the second successive time, Greenfield lost heavily to their opposition.
Gujarat, known as an excellent team in the 'A' division. Former champions for 4
years in a row were a formidable opponent. The weather was sunny, bright, and
ideal for a game of cricket. Greenfield hoped that their heavy defeat last
weekend would serve as good motivation for this match.
Having won the toss, Arees consulted with the team as to what they would like to
do, and it was unanimous that we should field and chase the total that Gujarat
would post, because of last week's collapse. Greenfield took to the field with
great confidence. The opening bowlers Ram and Sunil caused the opening batsmen
problems. Unfortunately, there were some runs flowing and Gujarat got to 51
after 10 overs without loss. It was the bowling of Arvind that pegged them back,
taking the first two wickets with his off spin with great variation. Zaufer
bagged the next wicket just before the water break and Greenfield were back in
the game, as Gujarat was 110-3 at 25 overs. The debut of Steve was cut short
when he pulled a muscle in his lower back and had to sit out the rest of the
game. After the water break, usually Greenfield's weakness, they came out again,
played, and fielded well. Arees and Jonny took five quick wickets, including the
very satisfying one of Salman in the first ball. It was unfortunate that Jonny
just missed out on the hat trick. Greenfield continued to bowl and field well,
but the innings was concluded with a big six by Rakesh Patel to bring up his
century. Greenfield did very well to restrict Gujarat to 225-9.
The team talk was positive, and captain Arees asked batsmen to set themselves a
target and reach it in their innings. Unfortunately not many of those targets
were reached. Greenfield started positively but slowly, but the loss of Zaufer
brought about another mini-collapse and Greenfield struggled to the break at
80-7, with Sunil top scoring with a quick fire 22. The innings was closed out
soon after for an unimpressive 113.A lot of discussion and soul searching in a
meeting after the game allowed everyone to air their feelings and get everything
out in the open. It is crunch time for Greenfield and I hope this will make a
difference in our crucial game next weekend against Scona.
Man of the Match, Jonathan for his impressive 9-0-36-3 bowling performance. A
great spell at the right time with lots of pace and accuracy. In addition to the
the whole team for our excellent fielding. For 45 overs we bowled and fielded
like the team and contained an explosive Gujarat batting line up to 225, in
which only three batsmen made significant contributions.
Thoughts and comments: Our whole batting line up for lack of concentration,
application and mental toughness to chase a total of over 200 runs. |
