Match
Report by Jonathan Rae:
The day was clear and sunny and looked full of cricket. Greenfield were looking
to avenge their close defeat by Milwoods from the last game. At least the umpire
was of a better standard this week than last.
Skipper Arees won the toss, and, as the weather was hot and sunny, elected to
bat first. The added advantage in this was that Steve was still moving house,
and was not available to field until he turned up. The openers Venkat and Arvind
started in confident form, surviving and prospering from the Milwoods opening
bowlers. Unfortunately, a mix-up between them resulted in a “yes-no-maybe” call
from Venkat, and Arvind was unfortunate to find himself trudging back to the
pavilion having been run out. Rajeev came into bat, and again looked solid,
until Murtaza tried the slower delivery, and, despite him being a clear 2 yards
down the pitch, Rajeev was adjudged leg before. This brought captain Arees to
the wicket, hoping that his touch and runs would improve in this innings. A
loose shot to the wrong ball, a top edge, and Arees was caught at gully by the
wicketkeeper trying to pull Murtaza to the boundary. Despite losing three early
wickets Greenfield looked comfortable out there, but worse was to come. Prashan
was caught behind for 2, off the seemingly innocuous bowling of Malik, and
Howard, looking good coming up the order, turned his knee diving for a second
run and retired hurt. Venkat was soon out after holding the top order together
for 23 not getting on top of a square cut, and Sunil continued his "6 or out"
policy and holed out to mid on. Fortunately at this point, Steve showed up, and,
after a frantic time getting his pads on before he was given out, then he came
to the crease. Accompanied by Ram, he set about salvaging a decent total from
the 60-7 point. They did it successfully until just after the drinks break,
when, after blocking the first 5 balls of an over, Ram lost it completely, swung
across the line and was clean bowled.
However, all was not lost, as Zaufer and Steve set about posting a decent score.
Batting sensibly and capitalizing on anything loose, they started accumulating
runs well, and frustrating the Milwoods' fielders by not giving their wickets
away. Seventy-odd runs later, and Greenfield were well on their way to getting a
good total. Zaufer was out for an excellent 32 just before the end. Steve and
Jonny batted the last couple overs with a series of frantic scrambled running to
close the innings on 168-9, a great score considering the start that Greenfield
had. Steve top scored with 42*. Despite this being a low total, Greenfield
always felt that they had a chance to defend this, as Milwoods were always prone
to a batting collapse and losing many wickets for very few runs.
Skipper Arees set an extremely attacking field – 3 slips and himself at silly
mid off, and within a ball, had the batsman Kasif, complaining to the umpire
about the fielders moving. Sunil Barran express was too much to handle for the
batsman, as he immediately saw his stumps out of the ground next ball with a
beauty. When Jonny trapped Ahmed lbw soon after and Greenfield were on a roll
and Millwoods were rocking. Despite having another even closer leg before shout
turned down, it was Ram, with a bizarre ball that got the next wicket, a hit
wicket as the batsman was hit in the mouth with a full toss and fell onto the
stumps. Unfortunately after that, batsmen took control over and Greenfield
looked tired in the field. Still the captain tried to rally his troops before
and after the drinks break, but in the end it was not enough. Millwoods coasted
home in 39 overs.
Man of the Match, undoubtedly Steve Turner for his heroic, if late, 42*, though
Zaufer was a close second coming in at #9 with a great 32. Both did brilliantly
in giving GCC a total to defend
Thoughts and comments: After a horrendous batting collapse, Steve and Zaufer
rescued the game in heroic style. Their stand, sensible and at times explosive,
allowed the bowlers to defend a decent target and for Arees to set attacking
fields that the situation demanded. Arees stayed positive in his captaincy and
changed the bowling intelligently. Again, the top order collapsed, admittedly in
the face of some tight bowling. |
