Match
Report by Jonathan Rae:
The day started with so much euphoria and ended in such disappointment.
Greenfield were about to play their second game in 2 days as part of a
double-header and they were tired but happy. As ‘Scona had won as well
yesterday it was vital that GCC come out fighting to try and beat the
champions elect of the ‘A’ division. Again, as the opponents has turned up
late, Gujarat forfeit the toss, and GCC again had no hesitation in batting
on a sunny, but windy day at their most favorite ground Millwoods. As the
day before, Venkat and Haseeb opened the batting. However, Kamlesh wasn’t
to be put off with the pinch-hitter Haseeb and bowled him early for 1.
Venkat and Rajeev put on a great recovery until Venkat holed out to
another Patel for a good 21. Rajeev at the other end could only watch
while Arees was caught out excellently by the substitute fielder at square
leg, and Steve was run out for the second time of his career (and twice in
two days!) soon after. Arvind was then caught behind without scoring from
the dangerous Harshad. Sunil and Rajeev started the fightback in
tremendous style, and Sunil even played one or two defensive shots!
Unfortunately the honesty of Sunil cost Rajeev his wicket soon after this,
when he played on, without anyone (including the umpire, AND Rajeev)
seeing it. After deliberation, Sunil came forward and said that he saw
that Rajeev played on, and Rajeev walked. This was to prove a very
controversial bit of sportsmanship later on in the match. After Rajeev
fell, Prashan soon followed, then Zaufer, and finally Ram, as Greenfield
failed to reach 100 runs against Gujarat for the third time this season
(and left Jonny stranded for the sixth time in 8 matches!!). Greenfield
were all out for 96, and very, very disappointed. Harshad ended up with
5-13 in 3 overs to be the pick of the Gujarat bowlers.
Still there was some optimism in the camp as GCC had a plan to get their
best batsman Ossie out early and was going to open with spin, when Gujarat
decided not to open with him. This was exactly what Greenfield wanted, and
Ram was on FIRE, and took the first three wickets with extreme pace. With
Rajeev’s help, Ram had the first two, Kamlesh and Harish caught behind
playing far too late, beaten by pace. Kamlesh’s wicket was especially
sweet, Ram had been dreaming of his wicket for years ! This brought
dangerman Ossie to the crease. N. Patel was blatantly caught behind within
a short time of coming to the crease, but did not walk, surely against the
spirit of the game, and definitely against the spirit of the match bearing
in mind Rajeev’s dismissal in Greenfield’s innings. Still he stayed there,
but justice was done when he was dismissed leg before by man of the
moment, Ram. Unfortunately after this Ossie was dropped while on zero, and
this proved to be the turning point of the match, as he went on to score a
match winning 45, to get Gujarat within sight of victory. Jonny and Arvind
chipped in with a wicket apiece but it proved to be too little too late,
and Gujarat won with plenty of time to spare when Amit brought them home.
Man of the Match: Ram Maikala - its all about sheer pace
Thoughts and comments: Destructive Ram Maikala. A great spell of bowling
right when GCC needed it. Our fielding and bowling defending another small
score under 100. Top notch. We came probably within Ossie’s wicket of
collapsing Gujarat.
The disgraceful behavior of a certain Gujarat batsman. You hit the ball
and it is caught, you walk. End of story. You should never try and bluff
it out regardless of situation, especially as it is as obvious a nick as
it was today. Equally as bad is Ossie’s defense of the batsman, as you
cannot defend such disgraceful sportsmanship, no matter what.
Our batting again, after such a great performance in St. Albert the day
before. Concentration and application lacking, apart from Venkat, Sunil
and Rajeev. |
