Match Report by Jonathan Rae:

It was crunch time. With two games left in the season, Greenfield had to be at their best to survive in the 'Premier' division and be able to compete at the highest level next year. To this end, there was a very intensive practice on the preceding Wednesday, and numerous strategy meetings and talk throughout the week. We thought that we had to beat Edmonton, with a double-header all of us would be tired the next day and perhaps not at our best. The day started with a team meeting as close to 10 am, sitting in the warmth of sun at the St.Albert Cricket ground, we all aired our opinions and feelings before crunch time. There were a lot of heart-felt and honest opinions flying around, and, with everything off our chests, we were even more determined to win than ever. Edmonton turned up late, gifting the toss to an ecstatic Arees, as we had all planned to bat first. While the sun was beating down on the Edmonton fielders, Arees sent opener Venkat, with the pinch-hitter Hasseb to try and unsettle the accurate opening bowler Assad Jamil from his rhythm.

The Greenfield innings started positively with Haseeb especially taking a liking to Assad's line and length bowling, taking huge swipes at anything pitched up, and successfully put Assad off his game. The spectators took up a Caribbean carnival beat in the dressing room, and kept the spirits high while the openers enjoyed themselves out in the middle. Haseeb was first to go for an enterprising and eventful 16, and unfortunately Rajeev played down the wrong line soon after, and GCC were 50-2. This brought a determine skipper Arees to the crease, and we were treated to something seldom seen this season, a display of aggressive and quality batting. Arees announced himself at the crease with a tremendous blow off the bowling of Shahid, and the pair at the crease continued to take apart the ECC bowlers, first Arees and Venkat, and then Arees and Arvind. The Reggae beat continued in the pavilion, with a great display of dancing by the real legend, Ram, and some of Sunil's finest work on the drums, as Arees set about upping the run rate. Arees having passed 50 for the first time this season, Rohit finally got his wicket for a soon to be match winning 57. After this dismissal, it was left to the tail-enders not to waste a single ball in getting as many runs as possible to defend. Sunil, a sacrifice from Steve (his first run out of his career), Zaufer, Ram and Jonny managed to bring the score up to a very respectable 193-8 in their 45 overs, a good score to defend at the largest ground in the league- St. Albert ground.

The mood was good going into the innings break. A good, not great score to defend, and a pumped up bowling line up meant that GCC meant business from the start off. Greenfield did not have any luck in the first few overs. Sunil got the first wicket with his trademark outswinging yorker to dismiss Amir, but Jonny had a couple of catches dropped, but this was not to prove too costly in the end. Rohit started in great style, aggressively, trying to put the bowlers off their superb line and length, but wickets fell around him. The Maikala express soon ripped the middle order, with his superb pace, bowling both Jagroop and Ted Brown, who couldn't handle him at all. Even young Venkat got in on the action with a wicket of Assad. Venkat frightened them with ferocious pace. Arvind bowled well and finally dismissed Rohit for an excellent 64, with his trademark wicket, a catch taken well by Jonny at between deep mid-wicket and long on "Cow Corner" hence the name. Anyway, Rohit was caught at "cow corner' and Greenfield were on a roll and within sight of victory, as Edmonton were rocking at 116-5, and without a real batsman left at the crease. Their skipper, Dip was next to go, trapped by the deceptive bowling of Arvind. Sandip, however, took the fight back to Greenfield, with a gutsy and determined 30*, but it was to be all in vein! As Greenfield approached the finish line, however, there were several mishaps and missfields as the occasion and the pressure got to us a little. But with the regular fall of wickets, Greenfield were able to talk it over with each other, calm themselves down, and settle down to the task in hand of closing out Edmonton, and all but securing their 'A' division status for next year. The support around Sandip fell, as a run out removed the next two batsmen and Arees capped a fine all round performance clean bowling the last man Jordache, to leave Edmonton a meagre 11 runs short of victory. Greenfield were left to celebrate a famous victory!

Man of the Match: Arees Rauf, an excellent display of what he is capable of with the bat in hand. A display of quality and aggressive stroke play that GCC have been missing for most of the season. Set a good score to defend. There should really be 11 men of the match because everyone contributed positively to this victory, whether it be to sacrifice your first ever run out in the pursuit of extra runs (Steve) or to go and score a 50 (Arees) or to rip the heart out of the middle order (Ram). This victory can be put down to superb teamwork and camaraderie.

Thoughts and comments: The victory was especially sweet as, after we walked off the field, we were informed that Scona CC had won by default against the extremely dishonorable Victoria Park. Therefore it was vital for us to win today.
