Match
Report by Jonathan Rae:
What a game, what a day! The season started with a game against one of the
stronger sides in the ‘A’ division, Millwoods, made even stronger with the start
of the season capture of Muttoo from Greenfield a few weeks earlier. The day was
sunny and bright, with little wind, but the temperature was low enough for
Greenfield to elect to field when captain Arees won the toss. Given the strength
of the Millwoods batting line up it was decided that Greenfield would be happier
chasing.
Salman and Sunil opened the bowling for Greenfield and set the pace for the
early overs. The ball was doing wonders in the air and off the pitch, and these
two exploited it perfectly. Sunil was unlucky to end up wicketless and Salman
did a great job with 3-19 off his 5 overs before pulling a muscle. Millwoods
were soon in trouble, and, backed up by the support bowling of Arees, Jonny, and
Arvind, they struggled to the drinks break at 82-6. Greenfield was buoyant and
in great spirits for the second half of the session. However, as is the usual
case, Greenfield came back out on the pitch slightly flat, and after the drinks
break the Millwoods tail end started to connect, and a very intelligent 60* by
the Millwoods captain J Sidhu saw Millwoods post a challenging total of 181 all
out. Prashan and Arvind cleaned up the innings.
Despite letting Milwoods off the hook, Greenfield was pleased at the size of the
target. After Tea, the openers Prashan and Venkat started the run chase. Against
Muttoo and Murataza, the going was tough, but having survived the first ten
without loss was a bonus. Unfortunately, shortly before the break Greenfield
lost a couple of quick wickets, with some indecision on the run out of Prashan,
and a mysterious noise close to Johann’s bat. Resuming after the break at 58-2
Millwoods looked complacent, almost arrogant, thinking that they’d wrapped this
game up already. How wrong they were! As the wickets of Arees and Salman fell,
the steady Venkat at 32, it brought Sunil to the crease. No one expected the
kind of transformation that it brought about. With a dazzling array of shots to
all sorts of bizarre locations around the ground, Sunil set about winning the
game for Greenfield. As Millwoods realized that the game was not over, they
started to panic, and Sunil took full advantage. Three sixes and nine fours
later, and more panic from Millwoods, and Greenfield were within sight of
victory. With 40 runs needed Eric was out and Jonny came in to play the
supporting role in the closing stages. Jonny battered intelligently and
patiently. He needed a runner due to an injury that happened during the game.
Johann came in to fill the position as the runner for Jonny and run he did.
Several overs later the scores were tied. Sunil at 91 tried to hit the ball out
of the park for the winning runs but unfortunately was clean bowled. Millwoods
celebrated, but it was short lived. Victory was achieved courtesy of Zaufer in
the very next ball and thus Greenfield won the season opener!!
Sunil’s inning was an example to others. He proved that with determination and
commitment, you can achieve whatever your heart desires. He has tremendous power
and the ability to run between wickets. His flamboyant style of batting is his
trademark and it is too bad he missed his century in this opening game. However
he entertained his fans and teammates with some brilliant and thinking cricket
and save the day for Greenfield.
On a personal note it was a sweet victory for Greenfield after losing their ace
bowler Vijay Muttoo to Millwoods. However we would like to wish the very best to
Vijay and thank him for the great contribution he has made to Greenfield in the
past.
Man of the Match Sunil Barran was there anyone else Playing? Unbelievable power from a man
who doesn’t even wear gloves!! Plenty of inspired blows with awesome power and
determination brought victory from the jaws of defeat with plenty of smiles.
Thoughts and comments: Vastly improved fielding, great commitment to the cause,
and everyone chipped in at the vital times. Some top catches by Arees, Prashan,
Sunil and Eric and just a great team performance. We can still improve our
fielding and running between wickets. Keep it up for next week!
