Match Report by Jonathan Rae:

The new season beckons, heralding a practice match against Edmonton CC. With the closed-season arrivals, it is vital for both teams to assess their new talent before the real cricket starts next week. Sunday arrived and brought with it beautiful cricketing weather: Sun, an almost cloudless sky, and little wind. The outfield was not yet lush and green, and very slow. The pitch report was good, very little chance of the cracks developing.

An annual motivational speech by our captain Arees Rauf, and team warm-up started to get the newcomers really involved in the club and it's spirit. Greenfield lost the toss and were asked to field. They took to the field together in a show of unison, and soon got down to the business in hand. For the first ten overs, Greenfield were in charge. Opening with Jonny and Prashan, they mostly contained the two openers and took a couple of wickets in this spell. Due to the "two lives before 10" rule though they didn't count, but still made the Greenfield side feel good about themselves. After 10 overs and a revision and clarification of the "two lives before 10" rule, Edmonton started to get back into the game, and with some lusty blows from Amir Sheik and Adnan Latif they found themselves in a comfortable position at the water break. Nuhad's fielding was Jonty Rhodes-like at point. After the break, Edmonton dominated, though the Greenfield bowlers Arvind, Arees and Zaufer were unlucky with several dropped catches and midfields, and some lusty and fortunate hitting from the Edmonton middle order. Surprisingly Edmonton totaled 201 in their allotted 40 overs. Highlight of the final overs was an exceptional diving catch at backward point by Arees off the bowling of Jonny, who was especially grateful as his other three wickets didn't count due to the "10 run" rule! Greenfield was set a target of 202 to win in their 40 overs.

The openers, Hemant and Prashan got off to a good start, despite Hemant losing his "first wicket" early. Good progress was made till the water break, through Hemant, Rajeev and Arees. Rajeev came at the fall of 2nd wicket held his end in his usual steady manner. Unfortunately, run rate was getting slower, until Arees showed up at the crease. He made an immediate impact and batted with confidence and elegance, and hit some powerful shots around the wicket to bring the run-rate up. However in his trademark fashion, he played some careless shots by giving Shahid from Edmonton some catching practice. He was finally out giving the same catch twice to Shahid at deep square leg and was not lucky the second time around. Shahid was not going to miss his second opportunity and was caught at deep square leg for 30 valuable runs. Once he got out, the run- rate started to creep up, and a steady trail of batsmen trudged back to the pavilion without any solid partnerships being built. Despite this, Arvind stuck to the task, held the innings together. Apart from the odd ball, Arvind batted well and steady to collect 32 valuable runs for Greenfield. Being his first game with Greenfield, this game for him was more less getting used to his teammates and proving his worthiness, which he did very well. Shy and quiet Arvind has lots of talent and promise to become one of our regular fixtures. He came out big for this match and hope he will continue his batting success in the future games. Greenfield unfortunately fell 47 runs short of winning the game with 154 for 9. All in all it was a good-spirited friendly game with lot of fun and goodwill.

On a personal note, most importantly we in Greenfield have learned a lesson or two from this game, we have came to know our weaknesses and strengths, our priorities and ethics. We as a team has to improve our fielding and take catches. We have tremendous talent in bowling and batting areas, we need to polish. Always remember that running between wickets is vital and stealing singles will add to the pile of runs. A word of advise from the bowlers, make sure to wipe the ball at all times to maintain its shine for the seamers and spinners as well. We have always played positive cricket as a unit and has given 110% to the team and the club. All in all we have the best bunch of guys playing cricket together as a team and I am sure this will have a positive impact on cricket in Edmonton. Looking forward to the season opener!
