Match Report by Venkat Subramanian:

Its cricket time again!! After the league games, its Howe cup now. Not a perfect day for cricket with the temperature around 5c and with the rain gods playing their part in the morning until play time when they decided to allow the game of cricket to proceed. Greenfield won the toss and decided to field considering the forecast and visibility during the evening and also because they have been so successful chasing in the past.

We were missing three of our front-line bowlers from our regular line up in Ram, Joe and Prashan. But it did create spaces for two experienced cricketers in Saleem and Charlie and two budding young talents in Salman and Fahad. Vijay and Salman opened the bowling and soon Victoria park was reduced to eight for two wickets with Salman bowling an immaculate line and length just outside off stump and getting the edge which was cleanly snapped up by Saleem at first slip and Vijay as usual providing another early break through by uprooting the stumps. It was time for Victoria to consolidate the position until Salman got us the much-valued wicket of Damien, a catch at deep fine leg which was cleanly taken by the safe hands of the ever reliable Rajeev. It was a difficult catch considering the surroundings and the murky atmosphere. Soon, Victoria park's innings was getting over with Greenfield taking wickets at regular intervals and every bowler chipping in with wickets but inbetween had showed some lusty hitting, thanks to Eric until he was out by another catch by Rajeev. An unlucky day for Sunil going barehanded but really did bowl a very economical spell. But Greenfield was very slow on the over rate and this is one aspect that needs to be given immediate attention in the coming games. Getting penalized for a slow over rate is the last thing Greenfield needs, which has its sights set at winning the Howe cup, which they lost last year by a whisker. Soon the Victoria Park's innings crumbled and they were all out well within the stipulated overs of 45 setting a target of 148 for Greenfield to win.

It was a good performance by Greenfield given the odds of bowling with a wet ball in the initial overs owing to the dampness in the outfield, a result of the morning rain. Vijay went in as an opener with Farhad. A surprise but was soon silenced by a dazzling start. Greenfield had an early setback with Farhad getting out bowled in the very first over to Imran. Venkat walked into bat replacing Farhad. Soon there were fire works from Vijay's bat with fours and sixes being hit all round the park and Victoria park bowlers were soon put in their place after the high they were in getting the first wicket so early. Vijay's blazing knock could be seen from the fact that at one instance, he hit the Victoria park opening bowler for four fours continuously and the bowler, along the expected lines, was scratching his head with loss of ideas as everything either pitched up or short was vanishing all round the beautiful Victoria park ground. Venkat sealed the other end up providing the solidarity and a wonderful partnership blossomed. With everything proceeding at a very fast pace and with runs coming all round, Greenfield lost the prize wicket of Vijay, nicking one outside the off stump to the keeper looking to guide it through the vacant third man. But he had by then stamped his presence on the game and provided a very good foundation for a great victory with the blistering knock in his usual manner. Sunil came in to replace Vijay but didn't last long getting out bowled to an in-swinging yorker. Arees walked in determined to make a big innings. Soon, it was the swash-buckling Arees whom we all know, hitting the bowlers showing no mercy. Runs came thick and fast and soon Greenfield were very close to victory. With just 14 runs to win, Venkat got out lbw to an in swinger caught on the back-foot. But he had by then ensured that Greenfield doesn't have any scare of a crumble by his 39, gathered mostly through singles in his usual manner and providing the much needed support to Vijay and Arees who were going great guns on the other end. After that Arees wasted no time in finishing the game and in the course of it getting his first fifty for the team. A fantastic knock worth another watch. Greenfield secured a place in the semi-final clash with Islanders on the Sunday. A satisfying victory against a good team and a splendid run-rate striking out the required runs in 25 overs.

A well-deserved victory for Greenfield who showed great discipline in bowling, fielding and batting on a cold day displaying their great talents and team work and showing that weather is no barrier to their morale and spirits. A tiring day but no complaints in the end, who would with such a great victory. No great time to celebrate with the semi-final coming up the very next day. Three cheers to the Greenfield players and to the team management and their families, as they need special mention who came out there in such bad weather and were cheering the team all along. A great result indeed, which Greenfield dearly wanted in their hunt for the Howe cup. Their dreams are kept alive.
