Match
Report by Mahasri Weerasooriya:
The Greenfield Cricket Club played their second game of the season under
miserable rainy conditions. Both teams were ready and willing to play. The
Junior Colts, the opposing side, won the toss and elected to bat. The opening
GCC bowling pair, Vijay Muttoo and Ram Maikala kept a decent line and length in
spite of the ball being wet after each delivery. The first break came early when
Muttoo bowled a good in-swinger that completely fooled the batsman, Adeel
Hussain, who was bowled for a mere 2 runs. The rain kept pouring but the boys
managed to keep the ball dry for the bowlers and the bowlers did their job by
keeping the score low and restricted Colts for only 109 runs in the allotted 39
overs. A new comer to GCC but certainly not to cricket, Prashan Arumugam, who
traveled all the way from Calgary, bowled extremely well giving up only 17 runs
in 9 overs for 2 wickets. Johann Jeppe, who is always a threat to watch, bowled
very well for 3 for 34. So did Muttoo, Maikala and our Capt. Arees Rauf, who all
ended up bagging 2 wickets each.
GCC came into bat chasing 109 runs. The heavy rain completely soaked the
outfield and made it difficult for batsmen. Openers Rauf and Vice- Captain
Hemant Kumar batted very well to put on a difficult 20 runs for the first wicket
on a very damped pitch, with Rauf hitting a FOUR off the 2nd delivery. Kumar was
unfortunate to be run-out having slipped on the wet mat and Rauf mistimed a
short delivery and was caught. With the score at 55 for 4, it looked like the
Junior Colts were heading for a victory, until our ever dependable Rajeev Nair
took control of the game with some solid batting, scoring a valuable 29 runs.
Rajeev and our very own 'Sanath Jayasuriya' like Mahasri Weerasooriya put on a
solid partnership of 21 runs for GCC. Mahasri scored only three runs and at a
time like that, it was worth fifty. We needed him to bat with Rajeev and he did
exactly what his Captain ordered. Once Mahasri was dismissed Rajeev got the
green light from the Captain to go for the runs, as the run rate was getting to
be a factor. He was very unfortunate to have been bowled by A. Hussain. When he
left the crease GCC was only 21 runs short of victory, with ten overs in hand.
Our middle order batsmen, the power hitters like Zaufer Marikar, Vijay Muttoo
and Ram Maikala were still to bat. Ram and Vijay did the honors in five overs,
with Ram scoring a superb 15 not out, which included two powerful FOUR's and
Vijay hitting huge 10 runs which also included a FOUR. They were both not out.
Victory is always gratifying, when the whole team play as a unit. It was a tense
and high pressure game and the team kept their cool, played with lot of
character. We have to give credit to the whole team, our senior players and
specially to our Captain for making gutsy changes in batting order and field
settings. His passion for cricket combined with his cricketing knowledge has
created a positive attitude for the whole team. |
