Match
Report by Mahasri Weerasooriya:
The Greenfield Cricket Club lost their 1st game of the season after 3
straight victories on Sunday June 4th. Some confusion at the start of the game
set the tone for a very hot and humid day. Fielding first was not the ideal
situation but having lost the toss, GCC was forced to do that on a fast outfield
and a good batting track. Strathcona CC, the opponents were the only other
unbeaten team in the division. Strathcona team survived many chances and managed
to score 194 runs. Mainly due to five crucial dropped catches and confusion on
at least two run-outs GCC did well to bowl them out for less than two hundred
runs. They lost their first wicket off, the very first ball of the day. Although
GCC was totally focused for this big game, in reality they felt short by their
poor fielding, although our 12th man, Nuhad Hussain did an outstanding job on
the field. Prashan Arumugam was the top bowler with 3 wickets. The top order was
batting very confidently but Capt. Arees Rauf lost his concentration for one
minute and was unfortunate to have got the edge of the bat and was caught behind
for 13 runs. The other opener Geoff Fraser was out LBW. Our ever-dependable
Rajeev Nair was also unfortunate to have got out on the last ball before the
break. V/Capt. Hemant Kumar and Arumugam batted well but could not stay for
long. New comer Shahryar (Shaw) Shareef batted very well after w/keeping for a
score of decent 20 runs. The rest was up to the hard-hitting '3M' group: Muttoo,
Marikar & Maikala. It was indeed a delight to watch these three when they are
on-form. Two of them certainly entertained the crowd. Ram Maikala was
unfortunate to have got an inside edge and pulled the ball to his own wicket but
Vijay Muttoo and Zaufer Marikar did some damage to the Scona bowling attack. At
one stage it looked like they might just do the honors by winning the game. This
was never meant to be as, Muttoo was cleaned bowled for a top score of 44.
However the last man in, Maurice Zoysa could not hold his end and was run out
easily. Marikar was not out at 17. All in all it was a very exciting game and it
was a good learning experience for Greenfield.
Some bright spots that need special mention, firstly, it was gratifying to see
the fantastic fielding of Nuhad Hussain who was actually the 12th man. Although
he knew he was not playing the full game, he put his heart and soul to do his
part well. He was there with the rest of the boys at 11am. He was literally
throwing himself to stop the ball and throwing accurately to restrict SCC for
194 run. Spin bowling of Maurice De Zoysa, even with a leg injury did give some
headaches to Scona batsmen. Although the team lost the game, they sure gained a
lot of respect from the opposing team and the spectators for pure team harmony
and sportsmanship. It was quite evident that they lost the game as a 'team' with
no finger pointing or 'bickering', on or off the field. That positive attitude
will help Captain Rauf to guide the boys to a winning season.
Worth mentioning, Rauf was totally disappointed by his own performance and he
has vowed never to put his team through that again. A word of wisdom to Arees
and the team, Winning is great, but there are lessons in losing too. We can be a
better team by learning from past mistakes and doing the best in our next games.
GCC has nothing to be ashamed of. Winning or losing is a part of this great
game. Our conduct on and off the field will be remembered and not the winners of
last week's game. We have a great bunch of cricketers and we are all proud of
you. Thank you team, for a great game last weekend. |
