Match Report by Geoff Fraser:

Greenfield continued their winning ways on Saturday with another convincing win, this time over Millwoods. The game was played at Victoria Park on a day of intermittent blue skies but which became progressively more overcast during the afternoon, with the occasional light shower. Greenfield went into the game without regular all-rounder Johann who failed the fitness test, his place being taken by Sohail. Rajeev was given the responsibility of the toss but was out of luck and Millwoods elected to bat first. Greenfield opened the attack with their normal pair of Ram and Muttoo. Muttoo's spell of eight overs was noteworthy as it was accomplished during his nominal "lunch" break, after which he scurried back to work. Millwoods made a steady start to their innings, but Ram and Muttoo each picked up a wicket in their opening spells. Prashan was conspicuous in the field, taking two early catches, the second of which was very nicely judged while running back with the flight of the ball. After losing their first two wickets Millwoods put together a solid partnership for the third wicket, which began to look threatening without ever cutting loose. The game was evenly poised at the 25 over break, with Millwoods two for 85.

Greenfield were well aware of the need to break the growing partnership and keep things tight. Hemant came up with the goods taking two crucial wickets soon after the break, and eventually finishing with three. The fall of these wickets inhibited Millwoods from gaining any momentum and allowed Greenfield to keep turning the screws. A fine spell of tight off-spin bowling by Maurice yielded four wickets for very few runs, effectively shutting Millwoods out of the game. Greenfield's dominance after the break was so complete that Millwoods were all out for 111 in 36 overs. A dramatic collapse engineered by the bowling of Hemant and Maurice, and backed up with consistently tight fielding.

At the change of innings the Greenfield mood was confident. The bowlers had done the job and it was now up to the batsmen to make sure of the win. Prashan and Geoff went to the wicket with the initial aim of seeing off the new ball, and hopefully making it through the fifty minutes remaining before tea. A couple of early boundaries raised the score above the required run rate, and from there it was a matter of quietly accumulating runs with minimum risk. After a solid start Prashan, attempting to work the ball to leg, got a leading edge which was caught at mid-wicket. This brought Hemant to the crease, with an opportunity to cash-in on his bowling success. He and Geoff took the score past the fifty mark before Hemant was bowled by a rank full toss- as so often happens it was the bad ball which gets the wicket. Geoff showed his class with the bat, batting round the wicket very patiently. He played with authority and his innings peppered with trademark shots that clearly made the GCC innings look good. At this stage it was just a matter of keeping our heads. The shine was gone from the ball and run rate was not an issue. Rajeev and Geoff survived through to tea while keeping runs coming. A probing spell of flighted off-spin from Vivek kept both batsmen on their toes after tea, but runs continued to come steadily until the hundred was up. Millwoods, realizing the game was out of reach, changed the bowling and the final 12 runs came in a flurry, the only point of interest being whether Geoff would reach his 50 before the game was over. This he did in what became the final over. Geoff batted with class and grace, batting along the ground, with an array of strokes for a very patient and a splendid fifty one runs. This indeed was a treat to watch. It was a landmark inning for Rajeev, as he scored his first boundary for the season (at Victoria Park grounds).

Greenfield had won the game for the loss of only two wickets in the 32nd over, leaving us plenty of time to enjoy another sumptuous potluck dinner prepared by Chitra, Gene, Rashmi and others (many thanks to them). A satisfying performance for Greenfield, set up by the bowlers, particularly Hemant and Maurice, then brought home with a measured batting effort. Let's keep this level of concentration for next week's game against Islanders, in which we look forward to the debut of our star import 'John Ross' from England. Well played guys!
