Match Report by Geoff Fraser:

Greenfield rediscovered their winning ways on Saturday with a Resounding win, by 111 runs, over Gujarat. Play began slightly late at Millwoods, due to a tardy umpire, and under thick clouds and light drizzle. Johann started the day on a good note for Greenfield by winning the toss, allowing us to bat first and set a target on a ground that looked as if it would become increasingly wet and slow throughout the afternoon. A revamped batting order saw Geoff and Prashan walk out first to face the music. These two made a steady but solid start, seeing off the opening bowlers with only the occasional minor hiccup.

Prashan was the first to go, after about 15 overs, when, after looking very fluent, he played around an attempted flick to leg, and was bowled. Not long after, Geoff was also back in the pavilion, caught at mid-wicket trying to pick up the pace. This brought David and Johann to the crease, both of whom began to take heavy toll of any loose balls. The score was steadily taken past 50 before Johann was the next to fall. Rajeev played another steady knock, ably supporting David who was increasingly getting on top. A rather dubious LBW decision brought Rajeev's innings to an end, bringing a pumped up Arees to the crease. Our captain appeared to relish the chance to go in with a solid base already established, and the shine well and truly off the ball. In a whirlwind display of powerful but elegant hitting, Arees ripped a quick fire 41 from the opposition. This innings took the team score past 150 with plenty of wickets in hand, giving the momentum firmly to Greenfield. Through all this, David was providing the backbone of the innings, but with the departure of Arees he began to take full control. Numerous sweetly struck pulls and drives were a feature of his innings, and kept the score racing towards 200. When he was finally out, caught in the deep for a very fine 83, Greenfield had established a competitive total, which eventually reached 210. The innings was dominated by the knocks of David and Arees, but was also characterized by important contributions from each of the other top order players, who all reached at least the mid-teens. At the long break Greenfield stressed to each other the need for accurate bowling and tight fielding in defense of the batsmen's efforts. The rain had gradually eased off, and an uncomfortably cold wind was drying the outfield, potentially allowing the opposition better value for their shots. We all knew we would have to be on our game to win this one. And so it proved.

Muttoo and Ram opened the bowling, both looking dangerous. But it was Ram who made two critical early breakthroughs, the first one neatly caught at slip by Zaufer, while the second was a searing Yorker, which emphatically rearranged the woodwork. Johann took over from Muttoo and began a probing spell. His movement in the air unsettled all the batsmen, and he was exceedingly unlucky to have two very confident caught behind appeals turned down. Meanwhile, at the northern end Prashan took over from Ram, and kept the pressure on with nine overs of beautifully controlled medium pace. None of the batsmen could break the shackles, and as the pressure mounted wickets were just a matter of time. Indeed, wickets fell steadily and the fielding side never let their grip of the game loosen.

Highlights of the fielding effort included a direct hit from Rajeev after a relayed throw from Zaufer from the outfield, which resulted in an important runout. And a magnificent diving catch at mid-off by Johann. With 40 overs bowled and the opposition score still well under 100, it was clear we had this game in our keeping. Some light entertainment was provided at the end when Arees threw the ball to a couple of our part time bowlers. Rajeev almost had a wicket with his first ball, but couldn't quite hold the skied caught and bowled chance. Geoff had one over which yielded another sharp catch to Johann, this time in the gully. Gujarat saved some face by reaching 99 in the final over, but in the final analysis it was an emphatic win to Grenfield. From a player's perspective this game was a particularly satisfying team effort, with all members of the team contributing with either bat, ball, or in the field. Special mention ought to go to David for a very fine innings, Arees for some inspiring batting, and to Johann and Prashan for all-round efforts. Let's hope this form continues. Well played everyone!
