Match
Report by Geoff Fraser:
Greenfield consolidated their position as challengers to Scona CC by
grinding out another win on Saturday, this time against Victoria Park. The toss
was conceded by Victoria Park, since they did not have the required number of
players at the ground at 11.50 am. This put us in the unfamiliar position of
having to decide whether to bat first. After some team discussion it was
eventually agreed that we would continue with the method that has been working
so well for us, and bowl first.
We were missing Ram from the team this week, so Joe and Muttoo opened the
bowling. Victoria Park made a solid start but then lost both of their openers,
one to a neat catch by Rajeev at square leg, and the other falling to a
lightning-fast yorker from Muttoo. Greenfield had the chance to really turn the
screws but several catches were put down allowing Victoria Park to recover and
pass fifty with the loss of only two wickets. Johann then stopped the catching
rot by pulling off a blinder at first slip, diving low to his left and snagging
the ball in his finger tips. This inspirational piece of fielding was the
catalyst for a mini-batting collapse, with three wickets falling in quick
succession and Greenfield began to sniff another early victory. But Victoria
Park did well to regroup again, and pushed the score on to a competitive total
of 152, largely thanks to a partnership of almost 70 for the seventh wicket. The
wickets were shared amongst the bowlers this week, Sunil taking three, and Joe,
Vijay and Arees each picking up two.
It was perhaps slightly disappointing that we allowed the opposition to build a
total of over 150 after having them on the ropes midway through their innings,
but it also provided a good challenge for our batsmen on a clear, warm day, on a
fast outfield – perfect batting conditions. The regular opening pair of Prashan
and Geoff walked out with approximately half an hour to bat before the tea
break. This was not to be Prashan’s day with the bat, being bowled by an
inswinger in the first over, bringing Rajeev to the wicket with an opportunity
to build a big innings. Geoff and Rajeev played themselves in, and importantly
survived through to the break while keeping the run rate at around the required
three per over. After making a solid start to his innings, it was unfortunate
that Rajeev couldn’t stick around longer – he fell to a skied catch at
mid-wicket. Arees then altered the batting order giving Joe an opportunity to
add to his bowling contribution, which he did by playing a useful knock worth 21
runs. When Victoria Park brought back their very slow spinner, Ken Persaud, Joe
licked his lips in anticipation of some big hitting. In this he was moderately
successful before getting carried away and being bowled, giving Ken the last
laugh. Hemant lasted only a short time before also having his woodwork
rearranged which finally brought Arees to the wicket. He immediately set about
hitting Ken out of the attack, starting with a big six into the parking lot. But
once again Arees could not curb his aggressive instincts sufficiently to play a
substantial innings, and was caught overplaying a ball, which deserved more
respect. This left Greenfield in a slightly tenuous position at 5/121, and
without the batting services of Johann who had an injured foot. Muttoo, in
typical style, was not intimidated by the situation and he and Geoff brought the
score up to within ten runs of the target, whereupon Muttoo opened his shoulders
and finished the game with two big sixes.
But it was Geoff who steered Greenfield to victory. It was his batting that
scaled new heights. He has never known to be a slugger but someone who cleverly
chooses his shots and plays with confidence. He means serious business when he
comes into bat and he has proved this game after game that he is a batsman of
class and character.
Another useful win for Greenfield. It is important that we maintain intensity in
the field throughout an innings, and try to avoid letting teams recover. This
includes tight bowling, aggressive ground fielding, and especially taking all
our catches. The top order batting also still appears slightly brittle – it
would be good to see a couple of other batsmen play a long innings. But all in
all, a good day for Greenfield. Let’s concentrate hard on improving as much as
we can over the next couple of games.
It is sad to see Geoff leaving Greenfield to return to Australia in two weeks
and we would wish nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Geoff, we know
that you are leaving to take up a new job and it is a career opportunity for you
and an opportunity you cannot miss. All of us here at Greenfield will miss you
not only as a cricketer, but also as a friend and a good BLOKE. You are very
much loved and have been a big part of Greenfield Cricket Club. We will miss you
dearly. On a positive note, you can always be a part of Greenfield through our

appreciated. So please take care and may God bless you! |
