Match
Report by Geoff Fraser:
This game was played the morning after a tornado ripped through a campground
near Red Deer, killing several people. Our condolences to the families involved
in that tragedy. In comparison, the cricket this weekend was considerably less
dramatic, but provided another convincing win for Greenfield. Yet again we lost
the toss and were asked to bat second. Judging from recent successes, this
situation seems to suit our team, and we will face a tough decision if we ever
win a toss. Thanks to Ram for losing this one.
Remarkably, Muttoo was not able to extract himself from work in time for the
start of this game, so we opened the attack with Ram and ‘psycho-boy’ Sunil.
There was no clatter of early wickets this week, but both our opening bowlers
kept pressure on the batsmen until Sunil produced the first breakthrough. We
were made to work hard for the next two wickets, but patience and continued
tight bowling then brought rewards, as Liberty suffered a middle order collapse
which left them precariously placed at 7/61. Much of the credit for the batting
collapse goes to Joe, whose nagging line and line yielded four wickets, one of
them from a very slick caught and bowled chance. At the other end Prashan bowled
his usual dangerous and economical spell, and by the mid-point of the innings
there was a feeling within both teams that the game was as good as over.
However, Eric Hanoman who played an innings, which fluctuated between brutal
aggression and measured defense, yielding 67 very valuable runs did not share
this opinion. He was ably assisted by the Liberty lower order and Greenfield
were forced to watch their firm grip on the game slip. Several bowling changes
by Arees, and the welcome arrival of Muttoo were not sufficient to knock the
over the tail, and considering the meagre contributions of their top order
Liberty did well to bat out their 45 overs and finish with a competitive total
of 144.
At the change of innings the Greenfield batsmen were facing a chase which was
double what most of us expected after taking the first seven Liberty wickets for
only 61. Prashan and Geoff began the chase in confident fashion and appeared to
be cruising until Geoff was unnecessarily run out by a smart piece of fielding.
The Liberty celebrations were short-lived however, as this only brought the
run-machine David Redoy to the wicket. He and Prashan took the score into the
nineties, and it appeared that only another mix-up between the wickets was
likely to separate them, but Prashan eventually got a fine edge to an attempted
cut-shot, and was caught behind for 29. Rajeev came to the wicket and
immediately dispatched a loose ball to the boundary, and continued to match pace
with David, the two of them bringing Greenfield to within six runs of victory
before Rajeev was casually caught one handed at deep mid-wicket. David then put
Liberty out of their misery with his second big six of the day, and Greenfield
had won by seven wickets with 13 overs to spare, and the ‘big guns’ of Arees,
Mutto and Ram yet to bat.
We can be generally pleased with our bowling and fielding although the fielding
did become a little ragged in the late stages, while frustrating tail-end
partnerships were blossoming. It is important that we keep turning the screws
when we have the opposition down. The batting provided a little more of a
challenge than we have faced in recent weeks, and it is encouraging that the
challenge was met so comfortably. Both Prashan and Rajeev spent valuable time in
the middle with the bat. David was once again the foundation - I just hope we
are not becoming too dependant on him, but as mentioned above, there is still
plenty of batting talent in our lineup that has not been called on in recent
weeks. We can look forward to our next game against Victoria Park with
confidence, but we must maintain our intensity if we are to continue this
winning streak. Good effort everyone. A special mention goes to Arees this week,
for winning an award for the web page. It is a well-deserved reward for the
effort he has put in. I am sure the webpage fosters a sense of team and club
spirit, which is invaluable, both on and off the field – congratulations, and
many thanks Arees! |
