Match Report by Geoff Fraser:

Another week, another win. Any doubts that Islanders may have had about the quality of the Greenfield team were dispelled on Saturday as Greenfield dealt them a comprehensive defeat. This game followed a remarkably similar pattern to last week, so much so that I toyed with the idea of simply posting last week's match report. The Greenfield team was bolstered by the return to fitness of Johann, another appearance by David, and the debut of our international import John, who arrived from England on Friday. Zaufer unselfishly offered to act as 12th man to resolve selection dilemmas. As has become almost customary, Greenfield lost the toss (surely our luck will turn soon in this area of the game) and Islanders elected to bat first.

Ram and Muttoo opened up with tight spells, which put the batting side under scoreboard pressure, and although wickets did not fall rapidly, that pressure was never relieved. Prashan bowled his usual tight line, and beat the bat on numerous occasions outside off-stump, without being rewarded. Some brief big hitting in the middle order threatened to swing the game back towards Islanders, but two important catches in the deep, by Muttoo and Ram, retighten Greenfield’s grip. As was the case last week, Hemant and Maurice picked up several important wickets in the middle stages, with Maurice threatening to cost our treasurer a bottle of Johnny Walker for taking 4 scalps. John marked his debut with a direct hit from fine leg resulting in a run out. With wickets falling regularly, it was clear that Islanders were not going to post a big score, and Greenfield kept the pressure on right to the end, dismissing our West Indian friends for a modest total of 120.

Having dismissing the opposition in less than 40 overs, Prashan and Geoff were required to face the new ball for several overs before the tea break. This was a relatively torrid spell in which the ball swung quite sharply at good pace, and both batsmen saw the ball beat their bats on more than one occasion. Both openers managed to survive to the break, and gradually began finding the middle of the bat once play resumed. The score was pushed along without any fireworks, both players prepared to look for ones and twos in order to build a solid base for the team. Once the opening partnership passed 50, Prashan began to open his shoulders with a few lofted drives which accelerated the scoring, but eventually brought his downfall - caught at cover for a solid 22. David strode to the crease with an impressive record in previous games for Greenfield, and this was to be no exception. He and Geoff took the score smoothly into the 90's, by which time the win was 'in the bag' for Greenfield and it began to look like only a run out would separate this pair. But a change in the bowling, and a lapse in concentration, saw Geoff play all over a yorker to be bowled for 36. Geoff batted very patiently without a single hit to the ropes, just collecting ones and twos for his 36 runs. Rajeev was then given the opportunity to close out the game.

David remained 46 not out without enough runs required for him to reach yet another half century. His dazzling inning included 4 fours and a huge six. Greenfield had wrapped up the game in around 30 overs, with a strong batting lineup still in the pavilion itching for a hit. The prognosis is good for when we are required to bat for full 45 overs, and utilize all of our batting resources. Once again, most of the credit for this win must go to the bowling and fielding for restricting Islanders to a relatively mere score, which made the batsmen's job so much easier. Let’s hope we can continue this form next week against Gujarat. Well done again to everyone!
