Match
Report by Rajeev Nair:
On a day when Edmonton was celebrating the cultural heritage of different
ethnic communities, the green and gold team added another winning note to their
cricketing heritage with a 7-wicket victory over Junior’s. If I had to describe
the highlights in one sentence, I could just write another day at work, another
good team effort, another convincing victory (and of course followed by another
splendid meal from our caring executives!). The day began on a pleasant note for
Greenfield with Zaufer striking gold with the toss. Captain Arees decided to
take the field after hearing opinions both in favor and against it. It seemed
like the wisest thing to do, as the team had been really successful in their
recent run chases. Besides, as the league is winding down to the final stages
there was no need to experiment otherwise.
The opening bowlers Joe and Sunil justified Arees’ decision to field first by
keeping a very tight line for the opening batsmen. Joe kept moving the ball both
in the air and off the wicket so much so that it looked like he could induce a
false stroke anytime. And sure enough, the first breakthrough came through an
out swing delivery, which found its way through Fahad’s defense and knocked his
off stump back. (Fahad was so disappointed at losing his wicket that he ran
himself into a tree afterwards and had to get a few stitches to cover up the
gash on his head! Sorry Fahad if you ever read this, but that was quite
amusing). Johann replaced Sunil and continued to maintain a tight line and
length and the runs were very hard to come by for the Junior batsmen. Any idea
on the part of the Junior batsmen to break the shackles were quickly dispelled,
as the first aggressive stroke by Jacob (trying to cut a good length ball of
Johann) found it’s way into the safe hands of David at point. It was Junior’s
captain’s turn next as he walked unsuspectingly into the trap laid by bowler
Zaufer to be caught at deep mid-wicket (by Joe) after scoring only one run. At
this point it looked like the game would be a cakewalk for Greenfield. However,
some undisciplined bowling and fielding helped the Juniors put up a fourth
wicket partnership of 50 runs. The very ominous looking partnership was broken
by a good piece of bowling by Prashan, who had Salman swing and miss at a
delivery on the middle stump. Faraz who has been batting patiently at the other
end soon followed him to the dressing room. This brought another ‘Choudhary’ to
the crease, whose aggressive batting was soon curtailed by a quicker ball from
Arees who bowled him. Arees smelled blood at this time and quickly ran through
the rest of the batsmen, returning with his season’s best of 4 wickets for 21
runs. The bowling was overall very good and containing a strong batting line up
for under 130 runs without the services of Muttoo and Ram was a truly
remarkable. It was also good to see the number of extras stay under double
figures for the first time.
With a modest total to chase, the body language of the Greenfield players
suggested they were a relaxed bunch. The captain, however, opted to give a pep
talk just to make sure no amount of complacency was creeping into the players.
The start was not ideal for Greenfield with Joe returning to the dressing room
after a terrible mix up in the middle, which resulted in his run out. Any
buoyancy that the Juniors got out of this early dismissal was however negated by
sensible batting by Prashan and David who put on the first 100 runs partnership
for this season for Greenfield. It was good to see Prashan’s determination to
stay in the middle and play a longer innings. On the other side, David continued
on his good form in Green and Gold punishing the bowlers all around the park. It
seems David relishes his batting position in the team and the support he gets
from our side. He went on to complete his fourth fifty while playing for
Greenfield this season. He was unfortunately out with only 11 runs remaining to
reach the target. Sunil was then given the opportunity to get some practice for
the upcoming six-a-side tournament, which he was unable to capitalize on after
swinging all over an innocuous full toss. GCC reached their target without any
further casualties with a scene, which has become way too familiar these days -
Muttoo hoisting a huge six over the square leg boundary.
It was overall a very disciplined performance by the team. The only thing, it
seems, that can hurt the team now is by taking things for granted given the easy
victories we had recently. There are three more games to be played and three
more games to win. The first of this against Liberty next Saturday is in my
opinion a very crucial one. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, this should
be the game through which we send a clear message to the Scona team that we are
ready for the show down. A convincing victory for us next week would put
tremendous pressure on Scona who we play in what probably would be the match for
the championship on September 3rd. Secondly, I know most of us are looking
anxiously to the six-a-side tourney on Sunday. Although, I can understand the
passion from most players to see and do some lusty hitting, lets not get into
the six-a-side frenzy too early. The league games deserve a more serious
approach, especially at this stage of the competition. Besides, a convincing
victory on Saturday would leave us all in a good frame of mind to enjoy the
six-a-side ‘carnival’ on Sunday.
I would like to wrap up this already long report by thanking all our cheering
members and well wishers who turned up at the game. Welcome back Gene! We did
manage to keep, the team on a winning streak and Zaufer was a gentleman while
you were away! And thanks very much for the zestful meal (thanks to Asoke for
the support. We are still waiting for more offers!). Mahasri you rule as a cook!
A big thank you to Merentia for a job well done with the score-book. |
