The Greenfield Cricket Club opened the 2000 season on Sunday April 30th at
the Millwoods Cricket Grounds. Under ideal weather conditions, it was a dry
outfield and having won the toss, GCC Captain Arees Rauf took advantage of the
'batting' wicket and elected to bat first. The team responded well by piling up
a defendable score of 216 for 9 at 45 overs, with Dave Redoy (from the Junior
Colts)- future GCC member top scoring with a handsome 93 runs, which included 7
boundaries and a six. It certainly didn't look good for GCC when they lost their
two openers Rauf and v/c Hemant Kumar at the score of 14 runs but, newcomer
Rajeev Nair and Redoy held the side together, Nair with some stylish strokes and
Redoy with some power hit's slowly inched the score up to a decent level for the
hard hitting middle order compiled of Vijay Muttoo, Zaufer Marikar, Joe Boyce,
Ram Maikala & newcomer Johann Jeppe to finish it off at the end with some
rockets to the boundary line.
The boy's were pumped and ready to field and the opening pair of Muttoo and
Boyce kept a tight line although some 'rust' was evident due to this being the
1st game of the season, but on a brighter note the extremely deceiving bowling
of Johann Jeppe was a pleasant surprise (and thanks to Nuhad Hussain for playing
with us after a short notification), and the boy's responded with some tight
fielding, esp. Rajeev Nair who was 'on the ball' literally!!! Milwoods CC. was
all out for 163 runs and needless to say Captain Rauf was pleased with the
outcome and made sure that his team approached the game with a positive attitude
and lets hope the winning streak continues. |
